  • Rocking H Ranch is a wonderful family horse ranch! They are safe and secure for horses and family. Kathy and Donald helped my family one night at 10 p.m. when our horse had colllic. They stayed until after vet left. They answer your questions and teach you about caring for your horse. Lessons are great and fun. I HIGHLY recommend Rocking H Ranch for boarding and lessons.

I am not currently boarding at this facility but a very close friend and this individual‘s family is. I have been in the vet business for over 30 years, specializing in large animal care - primarily equine care. My my friend and my friend’s family love to ride when I come visit. It’s always a treat. I took note of what my friend and my friend’s family have told me, as well as what the other reviewers have said on here - that there is a small friendly community at the facility. The tack rooms are in a central location. There are a majority of good spaces for the pens. Some don’t seem like pens. It was not very appealing to have a big poop pile right by the tack rooms. That’s a terrible place to put it. The panels were good. Chain link is a cheaper way to go, but I and many of my colleagues have quit recommending it due to the many safety hazards for horses. Manes and tails can get caught too easily. The same goes for t posts. I’ve had to perform too many surgeries on horses that were simply having fun then suddenly found themselves impaled on a t post. Also, the covers for the horses are not fully adequate for winter conditions, which I understand does not happen in this part of Texas often, but if the horses fur gets soaked then freezes in a hard wind they would be unable to regulate their body temperatures and could freeze to death. I had it happen 6 times already this year - and I am not very far from this area. For a shelter to be adequate, it needs to have at least 3 of the four sides covered. Additionally, the very front security gate, I would have to agree with some of the other reviews. It really doesn’t keep anyone from coming in and doing harm in the middle of the night. It looks like it is merely to keep the horses that might get loose from getting out onto a main road, rather than keeping any bad guys from getting in to steal a horse or two. Plus, from what many have said over my visit this time about the horses on the outside gate is that they are not professional-looking nor are they flattering to the gate area, aren’t functional and really serve absolutely no purpose, and from what I keep hearing, too, the sharp edges are very dangerous and unsafe. Several people have cut or poked their hands. What was most terrifying during my visit, though, was what my friend told me one of the owners of the facility had told their family about two new horses: Two new horses that very clearly have mange. The owner of the facility said the horses had been in a fire and were simply healing. While I was there, however, I overheard the daughters of the horses’s owners ask why the horse was losing hair. In all my cases of working with horses in my 30+ years of large animal vet work, never have I once had to remind a broken-hearted family member their horse was in a fire or why their horse was losing large patches of hair. As I looked closer at the skins of the horses as they came up to the fence in the front part of their double pen, they did not have the scarred, charred, deep pink/red look that horses have when they are burned and healing. Mange starts out with white areas of the bald patches due to the hair falling out and exposing the skin. If left untreated it can become irritated and infected, turning pink or red with sores and abscesses. These horses didn’t look to have had burns, but instead mange, so either the owners of those horses were trying to get by with something or the owner didn’t ask for a local vet to check them out and give them the all-clear in writing to go into the general population around the other horses. I have done that numerous times for my patients. For the mange issue/reason alone, I cannot give this place anything higher than a 1. Coming from a vet’s perspective, that’s even being generous. Most places could get shut down for that. If the other horses get mange, then the owners will have a whole hell of a lot more to deal with than two mangy horses!

  • Donald and Kathy Hawkins are truly amazing people. Their knowledge is only exceeded by their kindness and I cannot think of a better place to board your beloved horses. Their care for the animals and boarders is beyond reproach and the facilities are outstanding. They are readily available to answer questions or help when needed. We have used various local boarding facilities in East Texas and my only regret is that we didn’t know about Rockin H sooner. My daughter’s riding ability has excelled tremendously in the 11 months we’ve been boarding here along with the private lessons she’s been taking weekly. Even though she had been riding for almost five years, until we came here, she had only progressed moderately. As a lifelong horse owner, I can honestly say she would not be the rider she is today without the guidance, support and instruction from Don and Kathy. We truly enjoy spending time at the ranch and visiting with the other boarders. It genuinely is a family atmosphere and a home away from home. There is plenty of roam to ride, whether you need round pens, a lighted arena, trails or an open pasture - they have it all! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to challenge my own horse with the amazing obstacles and courses they’ve constructed & they have also been so kind as to allow me to see how he’d interact with their cattle. The privacy of our own lockable tack room assures me our tack is always safe, but I never worry because everyone out there is like family. This is not just a great horse boarding facility, it’s an overall excellent environment. I feel honored to have my daughter be a part of Rockin H and I’m truly blessed to call Donald and Kathy Hawkins my friends.
